Fall Rodent Control: Tips for Keeping Mice and Rats Out of the Attic

Fall has arrived in North Texas, and many of us are getting ready for colder weather and holiday fun. But there is one problem that often comes up with the drop in temperature—mice and rats looking for a warm place end up in our homes.

Rodents love to sneak into attics where they can do a lot of damage and even make us sick. As your local pest control experts in the North Dallas area, we at Tactical Pest Services know all about this issue and want to share some advice on keeping those unwanted guests out of your attic.

Know how rodents behave.

To keep rodents out of your North Texas home, you need to know what they are looking for. Mice and rats look for warm, hidden spots to nest, and your attic is just the kind of place they love.

When it gets cold outside, rodents have a harder time finding food, which makes them even more likely to sneak into your attic. Your attic not only offers shelter, but there might also be things like seeds or pet food there.

Check your home for entry points.

You have to make sure there is no way for rodents to get into your attic. Mice and rats can squeeze through even the smallest of openings, so you need to check your home’s exterior carefully.

Look for any small gaps or holes near the roofline, around any vents, and where utility lines come into your home. If you find any possible entry point, seal it with materials that rodents can’t chew through, like metal or concrete. Remember to check your windows, doors, and the foundation to make sure there are no cracks or openings there as well.

Be careful about food storage.

If rodents can’t find food in your North Texas home, they will likely go elsewhere. So always keep food in sealed containers, take out the trash regularly, and never leave pet food out overnight.

For any food in your attic, like pet food or extra supplies, store it in thick, airtight containers that rodents can’t chew through. Also, think about the bird feeders outside your house, as they can attract rodents. We recommend moving them away from your house or even removing them during the colder months.

Keep your home clean.

Rodents don’t like clean places, so the more you clean your North Texas home, the less they will want to come in. Vacuum and dust regularly to get rid of any crumbs or debris. In the attic, keep things organized and off the floor to discourage rodents from nesting.

Cleaning your attic regularly can also alert you to any signs of rodents before they become a big problem.
